It's Friday at 4 PM and the update is due. You open last week's version, half of it is stale, and you start reconstructing the week from memory: what shipped, what slipped, what's still blocked. By the time you've assembled the facts, you're out of time for the part that actually matters, the framing. So the update goes out describing 14 closed tickets when leadership wanted to know whether the Q2-blocking integration is on track.

That's the trap. Status updates aren't hard to write. They're hard to write well under time pressure, which means most of them communicate half the picture. The 6 Status Update Templates

1. Weekly Stakeholder Update

The recurring Friday update. The one that competes with everything else for your last hour of the week.

Here's what happened this week on [project/product]:
[paste raw notes, standup bullets, shipped items, blockers]

Write a weekly stakeholder update with these sections:
1. What shipped — lead with user impact, not feature names
2. In progress — with expected completion dates
3. Blocked — what's stuck and what would unblock it
4. Decisions needed — specific asks for stakeholders, with deadlines
5. Metrics movement — only if there's a meaningful change

Rules: under 300 words. Lead with what matters most. No filler.
Cut anything a stakeholder wouldn't act on or ask about.

2. Executive / Leadership Summary

When you're summarizing a larger body of work (a quarter, a research effort, a decision) for someone who has two minutes.

Summarize [document / project / analysis] for [audience: CEO, VP Eng, Head of Product].

Source material:

Write an executive summary that:
- Opens with the "so what" — why this matters to THIS audience
- Covers the 3-5 key findings or recommendations, ranked
- Ends with a clear next step or specific ask
- Uses the language this audience cares about (revenue for the CEO,
  capacity for VP Eng, market position for the board)

Lead with impact, not process. Under 300 words. No preamble.

3. Launch / Status Report

After a release ships, or at a milestone checkpoint, when stakeholders want to know where things actually stand.

We launched / hit a milestone on [feature/product] on [date].

What shipped:
[paste changelog or release scope]
Goal of the launch: [the outcome we were after]
Early signals: [adoption, usage, feedback, errors — whatever you have]

Write a launch status report covering:
- What went live and who it's for (impact-first, not feature list)
- Whether it's tracking against the goal — say so plainly
- What we're watching over the next week
- Any issues and what we're doing about them
- The one decision or follow-up this triggers, if any

Under 300 words. Be honest about what's not working. No spin.

4. Blocked / At-Risk Escalation

The hardest update to write well. You need help fast without sounding alarmist or assigning blame.

[Project/initiative] is blocked / at risk. I need to escalate.

The situation: [what's happening, factually]
Impact if unresolved: [what slips, who's affected, by when]
What I've already tried: [steps taken so far]
What I need: [the specific decision, resource, or person]
Who can unblock this: [role or name]

Write an escalation that:
- States the risk and its business impact in the first two sentences
- Shows what's already been attempted (so it's clearly not premature)
- Makes ONE specific, time-bound ask
- Stays calm and factual — no blame, no panic

Under 300 words. Lead with the impact, not the backstory.

5. Board Product Section

The quarterly product narrative for the board. High stakes, sophisticated audience, limited time.

Write the product section of our board update for [quarter].

Strategy / objectives this quarter: [list]
Key wins: [list]
Key misses: [list]
Metrics: [actuals vs. targets]
Next quarter priorities: [list]

Write a narrative that:
- Opens with strategic context — where the product sits right now
- Reports wins honestly, without inflation
- Addresses misses directly, with root cause and the fix
- Connects metrics to the story, not just numbers on a slide
- Transitions to next quarter with clear conviction

Under 300 words for the written narrative. The board reads fast —
every sentence should advance the story or get cut.

6. Monthly Metrics Review

The recurring numbers update. The goal is interpretation, not a dashboard screenshot.

Here are this month's metrics for [product/area]:
[paste metrics: actuals, prior period, targets]

Write a monthly metrics review that:
- Leads with the one number that changed the story this month
- Explains WHY each meaningful number moved (hypothesis is fine,
  labeled as such)
- Flags any metric trending toward a problem before it's a crisis
- Recommends one action the data supports

Don't restate every number — interpret the ones that matter.
