A good roadmap includes strategic themes (not just features), time horizons (Now/Next/Later), dependencies, success metrics, and clear ownership. It should communicate direction without committing to exact dates.

Most teams plan 3-6 months with confidence, 6-12 months directionally. Beyond that is strategic vision. The further out, the less specific you should be — use themes instead of features.

A roadmap shows strategic direction and major initiatives over time. A backlog is a prioritized list of specific work items. The roadmap informs what goes into the backlog.
