A north star metric is the single measure that best captures the core value your product delivers to customers. It aligns the team, drives strategy, and predicts long-term business success.
It should: (1) measure customer value, not business value, (2) be leading (predicts future success), (3) be actionable by the team. Examples: Spotify = time spent listening, Airbnb = nights booked.
Ideally no — the power of a north star is focus. If you must, have one per major product area, but never more than 2-3 total. More than that defeats the purpose.
